Pre-service teachers’ training in pedagogical models: the Sport Education case in Spain

Abstract

The goal of this study was to determine application degree of Sport Education (SE) in in Spanish Primary physical education teacher education. A quantitative and descriptive study of documentary and bibliometric analysis of the teaching guides of the Sport teaching courses was designed. Likewise, a questionnaire was added that was completed by 31 teachers who taught in the courses. The results showed that: i) despite the fact that 66.67% of the teachers surveyed stated that the SE was included as part of their syllabus in the faculties, only 10% of the study plans made reference to the model in the teaching guide ; ii) a third of the teacher training faculties studied did not include the SE as part of their syllabus, and those that did (66.67%), only three dedicated a load equal to or greater than two credits; iii) only 33% of the study plans evaluated included bibliographic references of the model; and iv) a high percentage of teachers were not experts in SE. The findings show that SE has not yet been implemented in a generalized way and with quality in sports teaching courses.
